Kings XI Punjab defeated Rising Pune Supergiants in 4th match of ongoing Indian Super League 2017. The T20 match was played on 8th April this year at Holkar Cricket Stadium, which is located in Indore. Pune’s cricket team batted in first inning and scored 163 runs. Kings XI Punjab chased the target of 164 runs successfully and registered their first victory in this edition of IPL.
After winning the toss, Kings XI Punjab decided to bat first. Ajinkay Rahane and Mayank Agarwal, who are the opener batsmen in team RPS, arrived on the ground to start the first inning. Scoring 0 runs after playing 4 balls, Agarwal lost his wicket in 1st over. Team’s captain Steven Smith replaced him as the next batsman and accompanied Rahane in scoring runs for the team.
Rahane hit 1 four and 1 six to score 19 runs in 15 balls and lost his wicket in 7th over. After Rahane’s dismissal, Ben Stokes joined Smith at the other end of strike and their partnership geared up the overall score of their team. Hitting 3 fours, Smith scored 26 runs in 27 balls. He was caught out in hands of Vohra in 8th over and former Indian captain MS Dhoni came to bat next after Smith’s dismissal.
The right handed Indian cricketer could not perform well in this match and walked back to pavilion with an individual score of 5 runs in 11 balls. Manoj Tiwary stepped into the field to bat next after Dhoni lost his wicket in 12th over of the inning. Partnership between Stokes and Tiwary paved strong base of team’s total score. Hitting 3 sixes and 2 fours, Stokes scored 50 runs in 32 balls and lost his wicket in 17th over.
Daneil Christian joined Tiwary at the other end of strike and accompanied him in scoring speedy runs for the team. Christian hit 2 fours and 1 six to score 17 runs in 8 balls. On other side of strike, Manoj Tiwary scored 40 runs in 23 balls. The right handed batsman smashed 3 fours and 2 sixes while scoring those runs. The first inning ended with Rising Pune Supergiants scoring 163 runs in 20 overs with the loss of 6 wickets.
Punjab’s bowler Sandeep Sharma picked up two wickets while his teammates Axar Patel, T Natarajan, Swapnil Singh and Marcus Stoinis took one wicket each. With a good opening partnership between South African cricketer Hashim Amla and Mana Vohra, Kings XI Punjab started the long run-chase. Hitting 1 six and 1 four, Vohra scored 14 runs in 9 balls. After he lost his wicket in 3rd over, Wriddhiman Saha came to bat next and scored similar number of runs in 9 balls.
After the collapse of top order of batting lineup, Axar Patel played crucial role in scoring needful runs for the team. Patel scored 24 runs in 22 balls and walked back to pavilion after loosing his wicket in 12th over. Meanwhile, Amla too lost his wicket in 11th over. The right handed cricketer scored 28 runs in 27 balls. Amla hit 2 fours and 1 six to score those runs. Glen Maxwell and David Miller formed the next pair of batsmen and continued the run-chase with maintaining good run rate.
Smashing 4 sixes and 2 fours, Maxwell scored 44 runs in 20 balls. His companion Miller, who was batting at the 2nd side of strike, hit 2 sixes and 1 four to score 30 runs in 27 balls. With the prominent contribution made by these cricketers who batted in middle order of batting lineup, Kings XI Punjab scored 164 runs in 19 overs and won the match by 4 wickets. Maxwell picked up ‘Player of the Match’ award for his speedy batting performance.
